Having a healthy complexion has more to do with what you eat and drink than what you apply on your skin. In most cases, your skin is a mirror of your internal state. Therefore, if you’re healthy on the inside, it will show on the outside. You are what you drink. Here are some ways you can drink yourself to better skin.

1. Drink plenty of water

Our bodies are made up of at least 70 per cent water therefore this is the most important liquid for the skin. Drink at least two litres or eight glasses of water to keep your skin looking taut, elastic, and youthful. Herbal teas count towards your daily water intake, while sodas, black tea and coffee do not.

2. Start your day with lemon water

Lemon water is such a simple drink and a great source of vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium. When taken on an empty stomach, it stimulates the liver to flush out toxins, resulting in clearer skin. When the liver is working well, the toxins don’t end up on your face in the form of acne.

The Vitamin C fights damage caused by free radicals thereby keeping your skin looking fresh and youthful. It also aids in the production of collagen which strengthens the skin, leading to less wrinkles and fine lines.

3. Daily green tea

Green tea contains antioxidants known as catechins, and polyphenols. Catechins absorb UV light thereby protecting the skin from sun damage. Polyphenols decrease inflammation in the body and protect it against the effects of free radicals. Therefore green tea in an anti-aging elixir, as sun damage is the biggest contributor to premature aging.

4. Daily green juice

A daily green juice can produce numerous benefits for your skin. You can drink a different vegetable every day, or make your own mix. I personally like carrot, beetroot, spinach, with an apple for sweetness, and ginger for tartness.

I use two carrots, one apple, a small piece of ginger, three small leaves of spinach, and one beetroot. Carrots are rich in vitamin A which promotes cell turnover, thereby getting rid of dull skin and slowing down the aging process. Carrots also contain vitamin C which helps the body to produce collagen. Collagen is essential for skin elasticity and preventing wrinkles.

Spinach and kale contain numerous vitamins and minerals which aid in the removal of waste from the body. This minimises various skin conditions. Beets are blood and liver cleansers, rich in iron, zinc, folic acid, copper, and many other minerals. If you have kidney stones, consult your doctor before you drink beetroot. Ginger reduces inflammation therefore it’s perfect for those with acne.

5. Liver strengthening herbs

These include milk thistle, dandelion root, fennel, peppermint, calendula, and nettle. They help to trigger the elimination process of toxins from both the liver and kidneys.

Drinking plenty of fluids makes a big difference to your skin. Without adequate water, your skin appears dull, dry, and fine lines are more prominent. However, consistency is key. If you drink plenty of water yesterday, and then hardly any today, your skin would revert to its unhealthy state.
