The velvet touch
 Velvet sofa-set

Growing up, velvet sofas were the in-thing, more so if they were maroon.

However, not every home could afford it as it was considered a luxury fabric.

Now velvet is popping up everywhere; from the living room to the bedroom; on the sofas and headboards in the bedroom.

It has also become more accessible and affordable.

Velvet is a woven, tufted fabric that has evenly distributed cut threads, making it feel very soft.

The fabric looks and feels elegant, sophisticated and luxurious. Traditionally, it was used by the Europeans for nobility.

It is a fabric that should be used sparingly. Using velvet in a room, especially the living room instantly takes it to the next level. There is something regal about it, the way it reflects light and begs to be touched because of its texture

It is great on couches, ottomans, throw cushions, dining chairs, among other furnishing. It comes in different colours and adds depth to any piece it is applied to.

So, give your home the sophisticated glamour by draping it with touches of velvet. Here is how:

Sofa: Velvet sofas were popular in the 80s. They are back with a modern twist. They add instant glamour to your room and look even better when used on updated sofa frames. Go for pieces that can use velvet and still blend with other materials.

You can, for instance, have a settee made of velvet and wooden legs, then balance this by placing cushions of a contrasting fabric on it. You could also get a second-hand vintage chair and have it reupholstered.

Curtains: Velvet curtains are the best, especially for those who hate too much light in their rooms. Their heavy nature ensures no light gets into the room.

You can find them in second-hand shops. You simply need to know the size of your window and then pick a colour that matches with the room. Due to its softness, it makes your room stand out.

Velvet has sexy written all over it. It creates a magnetic allure that makes you want to touch it.

Pillows: For those who won’t commit to a full sofa reupholster, simple velvet throw cushions will do. Have them made in colours that blend with your furniture. Remember, however, that patterned cushions go with plain sofas and vice versa.

Do not just focus on plain coloured velvet. Graphic patterned too, look exemplary.

Our mindset is that velvet can only be used on furniture and throw pillows. You can, however, use it as a bedspread or even duvet cover.
