Keep your television unit in good shape

Living

With all the stares and attention your TV screen is getting due to prolonged watching of football matches, the television unit might just raise a red card from neglect. With television sets evolving to flat screens plasma and DLP (Digital Light Projection), there are more options for classy, streamlined and sophisticated television cabinets to boost your living space style. Here are a few guides:

Select the right TV unit

Whether you own a plasma TV or an older tube CRT (cathode ray-tube), it helps to find a unit that can safely accommodate the television’s full size and weight. It would be disastrous to buy an expensive TV unit only to realise that your television is unable to fit into it.

Use the measurement of the diagonal size of the television and factor in at least four inch space between each edge of the television set and the unit to allow for ventilation. Factor in the depth of the television so that it does not protrude precariously.

Most television sets are either black or silver, so select a colour, style and material that blends in with the rest of the décor in the room, whether contemporary or classy. For smaller apartments, stand-alone or corner TV units still have a place as they can squeeze into smaller spaces and if the unit has a swivel, it will ease viewership from various angles.

Storage

Even with wall-mounted television units, there is still a need for storage of multimedia gadgets such as DVDs, CDs and video games. Most TV units will be in metal, wood or glass. Find cabinets which include both open and closed shelves that can hide away the media gadgets while blending in with the rest of the decor in the room.

Just as open shelves make it easier to connect wires but could easily render the back area as unsightly, the closed shelves are harder to maneuver but provide for a neater and more streamlined appearance.

While the television is the focal point in most family rooms, you may opt to provide opportunities for creating more conversations and socialising opportunities by purchasing sophisticated TV armoires cabinets, which conceal the television unit and provide a drop down of the screen when needed, which are also be useful for bedroom televisions. A TV unit with doors helps to keep television behind closed doors when not in use.

Accessorise

Find decorative items to place on the open shelves such as trophies or vases. In this case, less is more so opt for minimalist style so that they do not steal away attention from the television. Well arranged and uniformed books such as encyclopedias are another option of decorating while providing reading material as an option for entertainment.

Where there is a built-in television unit, painting the surrounding wall in a different colour could accent the wall and help the area to pop out while maintaining a streamlined look. A mosaic or textured paint-drop will make the entire wall a piece of art while lighting will accentuate the entire unit as it brings out its aesthetics.
