8 things to look for when hiring for your small business

Money

The success of your business depends on the quality of your employees. Small businesses, especially, know that one bad hire can ruin the entire team's productivity.

That’s why entrepreneurs should be keen when it comes to the hiring process.  Yes process!  It involves recruiting, interviewing then hiring.

Most of the time when an entrepreneur needs more help, he or she will take in the first probable person due to desperation.

Here are some things you should consider when hiring:

1. Look for people who genuinely believe in your mission and are passionate about your product because they are likely to be loyal and committed.

2. Beyond believing in your mission, they need to be competent and there is nothing wrong with taking chemistry into consideration.  After all, you plan to get stuck with them for a while therefore you should decide on the level of competency you require.

3. Try find a way of ensuring that the new hire is virtuous.  You can ask questions that will shed light to this and you can also check with references.

4. Are they willing to learn?  Sometimes ‘competent people’ feel they know everything, especially if they are educated.  No matter how learned, they need to have an open mind and willingness to learn.

5.  Attitude and work ethic are more important than a set of technical skills.  Almost all skills can be trained, but a person’s personality and demeanor are very difficult to adjust.  You should ensure you put one’s attitude and work ethic to test by asking them practical questions.

6.  Share with them the job description and allow them to ask as many questions as possible.  Let them do more talking as you listen. The job description should capture everything you would like them to do. If you cut and paste the job description from the internet, make sure you adjust it to meet your unique specifications.

7.  Before you start the process, consider the specific skills and strengths which are missing in your talent pool. Get people on board who are better than you, who are creative and are able to challenge you but remain respectful.

8.  Finally, friends and family, many people ask if it is a good idea to hire them.  You could hire them if they are competent and fit the bill.  Otherwise let them remain as friends and family.

Take time to hire. Be very selective of your team whereby you should surround yourself with great people. Coach, train, challenge, and expect the best from your team. Like sports, it takes an entire team and coordinated efforts to accomplish great things!
