Floral power on your home

Living

Flowered living roomsOne way of adding colour, pattern and a distinctive style to your home is decorating with florals. Although many people find this décor too busy, it allows one to easily come up with a colour scheme. Better still, most floral patterns feature a variety of shades and colours that easily coordinate with solid colours, stripes and checks. This décor is great for those who adore Victorian or French decorative style.

So how do you achieve this décor style on a budget?

Spread it around: Ensure the pattern flows into the rest of your décor. Balance strong patterns with lots of solids, on walls, floors, sheets, or curtains. Some people may like more print while others may choose to just have small touches of the print in the room. With plain backgrounds, you can comfortably update your accessories from time to time.  Let the paint colour of your room pick one of the colours of your floral pattern to create a great colour scheme. The floral pattern will also help you decide your secondary and accent colours. Carry the floral print into the adjacent rooms by painting them in one of the colours in the floral.

Style: If you decide to decorate with florals, stick to the same style and colour family. Repeat fabrics within the room for the pattern to be seen through out the room. If your curtains are flowered, for example, use the same print on your throw cushions; or if you have a navy blue carpet, a floral with blue patterns will be perfect to bring the look together.

Mix and match: Combine a large floral rug with a small floral print chair, or vice versa. When you mix large floral prints with smaller ones, you eliminate the confusion caused by too many flowers. Floral prints can also be mixed with other patterns in a room. A floral print will easily blend with a checked or striped pattern; only ensure the colours accent each other and are in the same shades.

Bold and beautiful: Go bold with a single floral accent as a stand-alone decorating element. Pick a floral item that you love and use it.  For example, a grand floral wall hanging can act as your room’s focal point. Go for solid, complementary colours or soft patterns, like stripes to achieve the best results.

Furniture: Give your upholstered furniture new life by covering them with floral fabric. Pick a look that you will love for long. If you are not comfortable with flowered furniture, choose a solid fabric then accessorise with floral throw cushions. Loose covers could also be an option if you want a once-in-a-while floral look.

Carpets:  Floral carpets, definitely, add colour and pattern to your room. Make sure, however, that they don’t clash with the other florals in the room. If the carpet has too many flowers, ensure the fabrics have few or toned down floral pattern.

Accessories: You can always use artwork with floral themes if you are uncomfortable having the pattern on your furniture. Ensure they complement the colour of your furniture and carpet. Decorate your dining table with floral China; the table clothes should, however, be plain coloured.
