Keeping your hair colour fresh

Living

Keeping your hair colour freshSo you have dyed your hair your favourite colour. Unfortunately, the colour starts fading after a short while.

Many factors accelerate the loss of hair hues regardless of where you dyed it. Here is how you can control the fading of your hair colour:

1.  Never wash your hair within 48 hours after applying hair colour; hair colour continues to set up within this period and washing it then will mean a percentage of the colour goes down the drain. This is the period also when the natural oil in the hair will help the colour stick.

2.  When you eventually start washing your hair, don’t use any shampoo product that is described as volumising, clarifying, fattening or designed to open the cuticle; this eases the loss of colour.

3.  Avoid using hair products that have alcohol since they are known to hasten hair colour loss.

4.  Hot oil is good for hair treatment; but when you dye your hair, use it only when necessary. Limit it to small areas of the hair like on the ends.

5.  Hot water strips hair colour faster, so use only warm water then rinse with cold water as the final rinse.

6.  Keep your hair cool by minimising the use of hot hair tools like blow dryers and tongs. Air-dry your hair if you can.

7.  Reduce the number of times you shampoo your hair. This will minimise the wear and tear on your hair colour.

8.  Avoid environmental harm like the sun. The damage of the sun is equivalent to that of hot hair tools.  Use products that have SPF, vitamins A, C and E; these protect your hair colour from fading in the sun. Cover your hair with a scarf or hat whenever possible to minimise the amount of time your hair is exposed to the sun in a day. Never swim with your coloured hair open; the chlorine in the water is an enemy to your hair.

9.  Always have an expert colour your hair; they know how to treat your hair before dying it. This will guarantee you lasting colour. The expert also knows which products are more durable and will be able to guide you accordingly.

10. Pick a hair colour that does not easily fade; one that has a longer life cycle.

11.  Less is always more. If your hair colour is fading and you need a retouch, go for just a few highlights instead of doing it all over the hair.
