How to tell your boss you are pregnant

Growing a little human being inside of you is a special thing that can’t be likened to any other life experience.

Breaking the news however to your moody boss is a monster by itself.

Considering everyone at work will eventually put two and two together once you start gaining weight, they notice your strange cravings and your belly can no longer hold back, clueing everyone in on your next stage in life can be a tricky nerve-wrecking process.

If you’re toying with the idea of breaking the news before your body betrays you, here is how you can break that ice:

  • Factor in the timing

The reason many women take a while to break the news is out of gossip fears circulating in the office which can be quite uncomfortable.

And rightfully so. However, you don’t have much time until the bump begins to show. You may choose to tell your employer during the end of your first trimester or beginning of the second trimester once the risk of losing the baby have reduced.

If there are any projects you’re handling or important accounts you’re managing you need to finish up with that first then break the news.

  • Set some time aside

The timing is very important and can influence how your boss reacts to the news. Don’t choose a busy time when they are rushing out of the office or there is an important deal he is trying to seal and that is where all his focus is on.

 Schedule an appointment the right way so as to have the time to tell him or her when there are no distractions.

  • Communicate your plan

It may not seem like it but your absence from the office will deal a blow to operations and day to day running activities of the company especially if you play a key role in management.

With that, you need to mitigate some of the time lost. If your pregnancy isn’t a stressful one you can consider working up until a week or two to your delivery date then take your maternity leave then.

You can also ask to work from home if bedrest is recommended by your doctor. Let your boss know your work plan during this period.

  • Break the news in person

Do not be tempted to go through other channels hoping they will break the news to your employer. I mean, you will meet your boss in person at one point so it is a terrible idea to hide the news from him.

Tell him in person and avoid over-sharing the challenges and difficulties you are going through with the pregnancy. Remember this is a professional setting and it is not the place to be emotional, needy or entitled.

  • Do a follow up email stating the same

Sometimes the best way to communicate in a big organisation is through email, even after talking to your boss face to face. They probably have a lot on their plate and didn’t quite get the message you were passing across, besides an email shows more accountability.
