Friday, January 31, is D-day, and Geco Cafe is the place to be starting at 8 PM. In a bold, record-shattering move, celebrated trumpeter and music visionary Mackinlay is gearing up for a musical feat. He is preparing for an unprecedented 24-hour trumpet performance-a journey aimed at setting the Guinness World Record for the longest trumpet performance in history. "I am literally trying to gauge where my madness will get me," he says with a chuckle. "For the past six months, we have come up with a dedicated team that has embraced my vision, and we are doing this thing," he adds to affirm his dedication. According to Mackinlay, it's an opportunity to inspire artists and audiences across the globe with the message: "No human is limited," a philosophy championed by Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge. "Through this attempt, I am hoping to push the limits of what's possible and demonstrate the transformative power of human potential," he says. He is determined to push himself to the edge and promises to exceed the 24-hour mark, saying, "Why not?" The ambitious project has been months in the making, with Mackinlay dedicating the past six months to rigorous preparation. He has assembled a talented roster of musicians and bands to join him on stage, curating a unique setlist that reflects his artistic journey. "At the moment, I cannot conclusively say who will be on stage with me simply because we haven't locked the artists yet. However, I have worked with most of the artists and bands that will be performing, and without a doubt, we have a proper musical catalogue to keep going," he says. In addition to musical rehearsals, Mackinlay has undergone a specialized fitness program, working closely with a trainer to ensure his physical and mental endurance can withstand the gruelling 24-hour performance. Surprisingly, while many would think it's all about pushing muscles to the limit, Mackinlay believes rest is equally crucial. "It's not just about the physical aspect but also the mental preparation. I've been working out for months, eating well, and getting enough rest. After this interview, I'm going to take a power nap," he reveals. According to Mackinlay, the bands and other artists will rotate on stage, but he will remain present throughout, save for a few bathroom breaks. "We want to give fans a fully-fledged concert and not just me on stage like some mad person blowing the trumpet all day. I'll probably take a couple of breaks in between the sets," he notes. Amazingly, Mackinlay plans to go without solid food during the entire performance, relying only on water to preserve his energy. "With a full stomach, one gets easily tired blowing the trumpet. I want to push a vast, endless supply of air to sustain the continuous flow of music," he explains. Achieving a Guinness World Record is no small feat, and Mackinlay admits the investment has been substantial. "There's a stringent application process where your documentation must be on point. Furthermore, the attempt must follow strict guidelines with adherence to specific rules and regulations crucial for validation," he elaborates. It's also a costly venture. Mackinlay reveals he spent upwards of KSh 100,000 just to get a response from the Guinness team. "The process is long and tiresome, taking weeks or even months. I'm lucky mine went through in a couple of days," he says. Despite the challenges, Mackinlay emphasizes that his primary goal isn't clinching the title but testing his limits. The venue, Geco Cafe, sets the perfect mood for a live music performance. Mackinlay speaks highly of the location. "This place offers a professional platform for musicians to showcase their talents, creating an intimate and engaging atmosphere for performers and the audience," he shares, adding that Geco Cafe hosts more than 200 live concerts annually, making it the ideal choice. Mackinlay is a genre-bender in every sense of the word. Refusing to be confined to a single musical box, he blends diverse genres to create a sound uniquely his own. From jazz to Afrobeat, traditional sounds to experimental beats, his music is a dynamic journey that never settles into one lane. He has built a reputation as an artist across many stages and genres, both as a solo performer and as founder and director of the award-winning Nairobi Horns Project. Mackinlay has showcased his music worldwide as a jazz musician, pop producer, and entertainment entrepreneur, with four albums and numerous singles to his name. Additionally, Mackinlay has produced and directed festival events like International Jazz Day Nairobi and most recently founded The Afrolect International Jazz Festival. He also curates live music at Geco Cafe and has worked as a seasoned TV musician, including on several seasons of Coke Studio Africa. Mackinlay's passion for the trumpet began at the tender age of 12, captivated by the instrument's vibrant voice.
