President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday stated that the handshake he had with ODM leader Raila Odinga gave him peace. Speaking during his tour of Kisumu County, the Head of State further stated that accomplishment of government projects would have been useless if there was no peace.

“Handshake imeniletea amani kwa roho yangu…tunaweza kujenga reli, bandari, viwanja lakini bila amani na uwiano yote ni bure Tuliamua pamoja na Baba hapa hatutaki damu ya Mkenya yeyote imwagike kwa sababu ya siasa…”

“The handshake gave me peace…we can construct the railway, redo the port and build stadia but if there is no peace and reconciliation it is all in vain. We (Odinga and I) decided to put an end to the shedding of the blood of innocent Kenyans due to politics,” he said.

Further, the Head of State promised that the government will build a new international stadium and will change the name of Jomo Kenyatta Sports Grounds to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground.

The President and Odinga also had time to participate in the #JerusalemaChallenge much to the delight of the crowd. However, there were concerns regarding social distancing as thousands showed up, many not donning face masks. The number of Covid-19 infections have been on the rise ever since some of the measures were lifted and the Ministry of Health has warned that Kenya is flirting with the possibility of a second wave of infections.
