Democratic Party of Kenya youth leader Abdul Mwangi Karuri is missing.

Party chairman Esau Kioni yesterday said Karuri (right) was picked up in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi, by people they believe were police officers on June 25 and has not be traced.

He told The Standard that Karuri, 35, was taken away just a week after he returned from Ghana, where he attended a youth congress.

Karuri was on his way to Riyadh Mosque in Pumwani, Majengo slums, when men in plain clothes pounced and bundled him into a waiting vehicle.

"We are asking the Government through Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery to ensure the safety of Karuri if he is being held by the police and if not, then he should explain his whereabouts," Kioni said.

Kioni said continued abduction of people who are later found dead is causing anxiety in the country.

"We have established another official from Pumwani Riyadh Mosque by the name Dr Abdalla Iddi Waititu, is also missing," he said.

A relative who did not wish to be named said he saw two men lead his cousin into a black saloon car that had been parked about 300 metres away.

"It was evident somebody was directing them because Karuri had already passed them before they followed and arrested him," he said.

Karuri's wife, Sofia Juma Swaleh, said she is yet to hear from her husband since he disappeared and has no idea of his whereabouts.

"We have been moving from one police station to another looking for him but to no avail," she said.

"He has no links to terrorism and was aspiring to contest a political seat in 2017. Police could be having wrong information about him. He was the mosque's secretary while Waititu was the treasurer," Sofia said.
