Police testify in Baringo Speaker William Kamket case

All the 14 witnesses in the case against assembly Speaker William Kamket and two Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have testified.

Mr Kamket and MCAs Nelson Lotela (Silali) and Daniel Tuwit (Ripko Kostei) are facing charges of planning to commit murder and incitement before the Eldoret Chief Magistrate Wanjiru Cherere.

Three witnesses including East Pokot Deputy County Commissioner Daniel arap Kurui and officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) Martin Korongo and Lenox Baraza were cross-examined by prosecution and defence lawyers.

Mr Kurui told the court that the accused persons had attended a meeting in October 2014 where they incited the Pokot community to violence.

"Area administrators confirmed the attendance of the accused persons to the meetings though I did not personally attend the said meetings," Kurui said.

 Kapedo crimes

Corporal Baraza, who is stationed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, told the court he was directed by the Officer in Charge following further direction from County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Baringo to arrest Kamket.

"We received directives to arrest Kamket who we were told was involved in crimes committed in Kapedo. We liaised with immigration officers and barred him from travelling to Turkey," Baraza said.

Inspector Korongo disclosed that through information from police informers and government administrators he established that Kamket and Lotela incited Pokot youth against government security agents, non-Pokots and called on them to barricade the road between Chemolingot and Kapedo. The magistrate will rule on the matter on October 19. The prosecution pleaded for oral submissions prior to the ruling.
