Special squad to help fight crime

Kirinyaga, Kenya: A special squad has been formed to deal with kidnapping and general crime in Kirinyaga County.

County Commissioner Joseph Keter announced on Mashujaa Day the formation of the squad now headed by the County Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Julius Rutere.

“These criminals who have wreaked havoc in our county must leave at once as Rutere’s team has hit the ground running and I assure them it is a matter of time before they are apprehended and brought to justice,” Keter warned during the occasion.

To compliment the CID’s efforts in combating the runaway crime, Governor Joseph Ndathi said his administration is in the process of acquiring five vehicles that will be used in the fight against crime.

Ndathi said he had instructed his Executive Member in Charge of Finance Murimi Murage to complete procurement of the cars.

“Everyone in this county is concerned about the prevailing state of insecurity, but since we are now giving the menace a multi-dimensional approach, people of Kirinyaga will never again be subjected to this kind of terror, “Ndathi vowed.

A tough talking Governor said the criminals were terrorising innocent residents.

“Just like Keter has warned, we are going to pursue these individuals and within no time this will be the safest county to live and work in, “he vowed.

The worst criminal activity to occur in the area was on the night of October 14 when a Kerugya businessman Cyrus Munene Wamwenje was kidnapped and his night guard killed.

The kidnappers later brutally killed Wamwenje and dumped his body in a canal within Mwea on the third day.

The criminals then struck again on November 17 at Gathuthini village in Kirinyaga West District where they raided a home and beheaded one Ms Loise Wanjiru, 62.

They then dumped the head in a pit latrine, which police later recovered as well as the weapons used in the grisly murder.

Her killers are still at large, but the law enforcers have say they have crucial leads that may lead to their arrest.
