Poll took place in bar, house, witness says

COAST; KENYA: A witness in a petition challenging the election of Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi has claimed the poll exercise took place in a bar and a residential house.

Susan Wakuti Wanjohi told Justice Maureen Odero that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) did not provide voting structures at Rayani polling station and that was why a polling station was established at a bar and residential house of a village elder.

Wanjohi told the court that lack of chairs, tables and tents in the area made IEBC officials to resort to using Metro Bar Charcoal Kiosk and the residence of a village elder, Loise Mamyar.

She testified that both agents and IEBC officials had a good time during the exercise at Mamyar’s house as they were given food.

“They were given a seat by the village elder who later fed them during the voting process,” said Wanjohi.

The poll loser, Philip Ndolo who has already testified, wants the election of Mwinyi nullified on grounds that the exercise was not fair.

Ndolo also wants the election nullified because a candidate, Patrick Kris Ngugi of Independent Party, did not have the logo of his party. Ndolo is being represented by Stephen Mutisya.
