University of Nairobi are protesting over a missing colleague.

The students on Wednesday blocked Nairobi’s University Way roundabout disrupting traffic along Uhuru Highway as they demanded for an explanation from Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere.

Nairobi Provincial Police Officer, Anthony Kibuchi, attempted to calm the students out of the road but they insisted to have Iteere address them.

Concern has been rising in the University’s main Campus after an Engineering student vanished mysteriously almost two weeks ago.

Peter Kamau Gikonyo
Peter Kamau Gikonyo, a 5th year student, was last seen on campus on the evening of 18th March 2011 leaving his hostel along Mamlaka Road and heading to an unknown destination, probably to the library in Main Campus.

"We have enquired everywhere where he could have gone to but results have been negative. Even his parents in Lamu and relatives in Nairobi don’t know where he is. We are all very worried," said Jamleck Murimi, a colleague who visited the Standard newsroom on Friday.

Fellow students now fear that Gikonyo may have been kidnapped, since his mobile phone has been off since he vanished.

This comes barely a month after University of Nairobi students reported for the new semester.

Gikonyo’s colleagues have reported the matter to the police and have also scoured several hospitals, prisons in Nairobi in the hope of hearing a word about him in vain.

"Gikonyo was not a fan of nightclubs and didn’t go out much. He doesn’t drink alcohol. We wonder what is going on. There is a very good chance that he has been kidnapped," said his colleagues

Gikonyo’s parents, who live in Mpeketoni, Lamu are also in panic after they learnt of the son’s disappearance from the university in unclear circumstances.

The students have made an appeal for anyone with information about their missing colleague to report the matter to Central police Station in Nairobi or call them on 0724 571 003.
