Technical glitch? Users get free Safaricom data

Safaricom users this morning took to social media to report a ‘glitch’ that saw them subscribe to the telco’s platinum data plan for free.

Safaricom has four platinum data plans for its subscribers sold at Sh10,000, Sh5000, Sh3,000 and Sh2,000.

Subscribers dialed *544# and selected option 6 which allowed them to pay for the data plan using bonga points.

The Bonga points payment option is where the ‘glitch’ is suspected to have occurred and has since been disabled.

The overjoyed users shared screenshots of their exploits on social media, urging others to join in the frenzy.

@tamurai_inc tweeted:

Safaricom. If we come together, great things happen. If you know you know. Thank you prophet Owour for the morning blessings.

@ndiema002_ tweeted: That Friday feeling, Weekend inaanza smart saana. He shared a screenshot that indicates he received 600 minutes of airtime, unlimited SMS and 20GB data.

@sashimicarson tweeted:

It was a short-lived joy as some subscribers shared screenshots from Safaricom that allegedly informed them that they have to pay for the bundles, “the Platinum data plan you had purchased illegally shall be deducted from your Mpesa account.”

It is not the first time that Kenyans have taken advantage of a hitch at Safaricom to get freebies.

Last year, the telco suffered a systems failure on the administration of Bonga Points which saw some people redeem their inflated points for rewards.

The system error tripled subscribers’ Bonga points then.

Safaricom is yet to comment on the glitch.
