Photos: First Lady Margaret Kenyatta gives Rachel Ruto grand tour of State House

The 4pm meeting was a first in many months between the families after their relationship soured following Ruto's bid for the presidency in the wake of the 2018 handshake between Raila Odinga and Uhuru.

Photos of Margaret and Rachel walking shoulder to shoulder around the expansive residence that boasts perfectly manicured lawns and metal artworks inspired by Kenya's rich wildlife heritage, generated social media buzz.

Uhuru had days earlier declared at Maasai Lodge during a meeting with Azimio la Umoja parliamentary group leaders that Odinga was his preferred president despite the outcome of the August 9 polls.

The president said Kenyans denied themselves a chance to foster unity in the country by failing to vote for Odinga, who has since released a statement saying he will not attend Ruto's swearing in as the fifth president.

"You may think you have denied him [Raila] an opportunity to lead this country, but you have denied yourself an opportunity to have a person that would have united and healed this country," said Uhuru.
