Police caught on video sexually assaulting a man records statement

Police in Nakuru have opened investigations into an incident where an officer was captured in a viral video clip grabbing a suspect’s genitals when he was arresting him.

The policeman of the rank of a Corporal is stationed at Nakuru Central Police Station.

Authorities made the decision today after the video went viral on social media.

Nakuru Town East police commander Elena Kabukuru said an inquiry file has been opened to establish what transpired before they can take action against the officer.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred between May 3 and 5 at Central Police Station parking and we have taken appropriate action,” she told The Standard Digital today.

However, no action will be taken against the officer because the complainant is yet to report the incident.

“We are looking for a complainant to record a statement then we know what action to take,” Ms. Kabukuru.

She confirmed receiving the video on Wednesday night following an uproar on social media.

"The incident is disturbing. We cannot allow officers to act contrary to set up guidelines,” she said.

In a video clip that went viral on social media platform, the officer is seen beating a suspect, and went further to squeeze his genitals.

The suspect is seen groaning in pain and pleading for forgiveness, but the officer dressed in a full police uniforms seemed to care less.

The Standard Digital has established that victim was among 11 other people who were arrested on May 3 at Moi flat estate while drinking in a car.

According to a source, the suspect who allegedly violated the Covid-19 public health regulations, were taken to Central Police Station.

None of them was booked in the Occurrence Book but they paid Sh5,000 each to be released.

The vehicle they were occupying at the time of the incident was impounded and driven to Central Police Station.

But it is still not clear whether it was released to the owner.

Officials of the Nakuru Human Rights Network who are following up the matter revealed that the victim was traumatized and has left town.

Simon Nasieku, the organisation chairperson, said he was in the process of writing to the Independent Police Oversight Authority

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi is also following up with the case and has requested the public to supply him with details about the victim.

County police commander Marcus Ocholla condemned the act, saying anybody with a complaint against an officer should report for action.

"This is an unfortunate act. Police are expected to diligently perform their role, without intimidating members of the public," said Ocholla in a phone interview.
