The Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital will open its doors to patients tomorrow.
This follows a visit to the facility by officials from both the national and county governments to confirm that recently recruited staff had reported to work.
The hospital that is located in Othaya town will be the fourth Level Six teaching and referral facility in the country, and the first in central Kenya.
Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman Steven Kirogo, Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Othaya MP Gichuki Mugambi toured the hospital, whose construction was started in 2010 by retired President Kibaki.
“We have recruited 527 staff, including the chief executive officer, professionals and support staff. We expect they will start work even as we make plans to recruit more,” Mr Kirogo said.
According to the PSC boss, the hospital requires 1,347 staff to run at an optimal level.
Mr Kahiga said cooperation between the two levels of government had helped ensure the facility was completed.
“I am happy that President Uhuru Kenyatta heard our pleas and took over the facility as a referral hospital. It has been a cordial and beneficial relationship between the governments at both the county and national level."
The governor said the hospital would have a diabetes centre as well as offer specialised treatment through the referral system.
“This facility will ease congestion at Nyeri County Referral Hospital and serve residents from Laikipia and Kirinyaga who have ended up in our facilities due to strikes by medics,” said Kahiga.
