You won’t be sacked, Magoha tells 160 interdicted teachers

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha (pictured) says the 160 teachers interdicted for disrupting training on the new curriculum will not be sacked.

Prof Magoha said the teachers are undergoing normal disciplinary action by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) after which they will be reinstated.

“It was a government policy that teachers be trained before the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum and the 160 teachers opposed it violently. We will not apply draconian rules on them. We will listen to them. We are not drunk with power,” he said yesterday.

Policy making

The CS spoke at Kakamega High School as he wrapped up the training programme.

He said they welcome divergent views on the new system, saying it should not be seen as if they are competing anyone.

He said changing the curriculum is not a punishment on teachers, but is meant to equip learners with knowledge and skills as per the needs of the job market.

Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Wilson Sossion opposed the training on grounds that they were not involved in policy formulation and also that it was ill-timed.
