The air crash involving Ethiopian airlines in which 157 people on board perished is the latest in accidents in the aviation industry.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane crashed six minutes after taking off from Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, on a flight to Nairobi.
A statement from the airline said the Boeing 737 crashed around Bishoftu, or Debre Zeit, some 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of the capital, shortly after taking off at 8:38 a.m. local time.
The state-owned Ethiopian Airlines calls itself Africa’s largest carrier and has ambitions of becoming the gateway to the continent.
The Boeing 737-800 MAX is the same type of the plane as the Indonesian Lion Airjet that crashed on October 29 last year, 13 minutes after take-off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.
The last major accident involving an Ethiopian airlines passenger plane was a Boeing 737-800 that exploded after taking off from Lebanon in 2010, killing 83 passengers and seven on board.
Boeing Airlines said on its Twitter account that it was aware of the reports about yesterday’s accident and was “closely monitoring the situation”.
Investigators said the Malaysian plane which had had technical problems on previous flights should have been grounded.
