No elections in NASA strongholds, says former Machakos senator Johnstone Muthama

Former Machakos senator Johnstone Muthama has criticised the Jubilee Government for outlawing peaceful demonstrations in Kenya’s major cities, insisting that NASA supporters will continue storming in streets for nationwide demonstrations from Monday.

Muthama who was speaking during a burial in Makueni, maintained that there will be no elections in NASA strongholds.

“From Monday we will continue with street demonstrations, we are against the October 26 elections and we will boycott elections in Ukambani, coast, Western, upper and lower North Eastern, all parts of Homan Bay, Kisumu, Nyamira among other regions”, said Muthama

The former senator expressed his dissatisfaction with Jubilee Government over change of election laws to fit their needs.

“You cannot change the constitution at the last minute rush, constitution is not for Uhuru alone but for over 40 million Kenyans”, he said.

According to Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo, if one constituency boycotts elections then the whole process will be nullified and there will be no basis for declaring a winner.

However, Maanzo said that the acting interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i should be held accountable for the police killings going on during demonstrations.

“If there is no fairness then there cannot be peace, the Government is preparing to commit genocide and Matiang’i should be the first one to be charged,” warned Maanzo.

He further said the election laws passed by parliament was a waste of time and money because it doesn’t conform to the 2/3 majority requirement.

“The constitution cannot be amended through back parliament laws without NASA legislators, it’s only through a referendum that such a process can be initiated,” said Maanzo.

At the same time, Kaiti constituency MP Joshua Kimilu appealed to NASA legislators to remain firm as they push for reforms in the electoral body, calling upon voters not to be lured by Jubilee goodies.
