Intrigues surrounding Sonko’s selection of cabinet

Governor Mike Sonko

Governor Mike Sonko faces a tough time as he assembles his administration given the many competing interests.

Last week, Sonko advertised the 10 positions of County Executive Committee (CEC) Member and County Secretary.

The latter will double up as Head of Public Service.

According to sources close to the governor, he is caught between repaying the loyalty of those who were part of his campaign team and professionals fronted by top Jubilee Party leaders.

Already, State House has recommended one of its staff identified as Peter Kariuki as a potential Chief of Staff. Mr Kariuki currently works in the Cabinet office as a legal officer.

Influence appointments

Top Jubilee leaders will also influence CEC and chief officers appointments, as the party seeks to play a major role in helping the governor transform the city.

“I was elected by Nairobi voters and will strive to serve all residents. Much as my campaign team expects rewards, I will ensure that they are persons with requisite skills from different professional fields,” said Sonko.

The governor declared the positions vacant and placed an advertisement in national newspapers inviting qualified people to apply by September 27.
