HOSTS POST MIXED RESULTS IN EA GAMES: Kenya wins women’s taekwondo, but loses volleyball title to Uganda

Beatrice Mwangi of Moi University floored Zipporah Auma of Kibabii University 5-3 to win women's taekwondo bantamweight category in the ongoing East Africa Universities Games at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) in Juja.

Another Kenyan, Evelyn Muthamia of Kenya Methodist University, won bronze in the same weight yesterday.

Kenya had another clean sweep in women’s fin weight after Elizabeth Mushebi of Kibabii won gold, while Lucy Jefwa (Kemu) won silver and Sara Namarome (Jkuat) settled for bronze.

It was the same script in women’s middleweight contest, which was won by Evelyn Aluoch (Kibabii), while Asili Hussein (Kenyatta University) won silver and Evelyn Muthamia (Kemu) won bronze.

But it was not the same script for Elijah Kimani of Jkuat, who lost in men’s middleweight final to a flawless Nelson Mandela of Uganda’s Ndejje University.

Despite the massive home support, Kimani was beaten 12-7. Emmanuel Musuko of Pwani University won bronze medal.

Ndejje also defeated Kenyatta University 3-0 to lift women’s volleyball title yesterday. Ndejje recorded 25-20, 25-13, 27-25 for victory against KU.

However, Kenyatta University head coach Nelson Kibet remained optimistic that he would win in men’s volleyball final.

“My girls have been impressive ahead of their loss in the final, but Ndejje had their act together, which saw them beat us with such ease,”Kibet said.

St.Paul University beat Ugandan Christian University (UCU) 3-2 (13-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-13, 15-9) in the third/fourth place playoff.

Men’s volleyball bronze went to UCU, who beat Ndejje University 3-1(25-17, 25-22, 31-29) in the third/fourth playoff.

In women’s hockey, United States International University (USIU) booked a berth to the final, where they will play University of Eldoret. USIU defeated Mount Kenya University (MKU) 3-0 in the semifinal, while University of Eldoret edged Nairobi University 2-1 in the other semi.

USIU Flames, Kenya’s representative in the 22nd Fiba Africa Clubs Basketball Championship in Maputo, Mozambique, beat Nairobi University’s Dynamites 44-33 to book a semifinal date with perennial rivals, UCU, in women’s basketball.

Flames began the match on a low note, as they trailed Dynamites 9-2 in the opening quarter. They narrowed the gap to 19-17 in the second quarter. USIU were still trailing Dynamites in the third quarter, but turned the tables in the last quarter, before sealing the match 44-33.

UCU are the championships' men and women basketball defending champions.

“So far, we have had a good run. Our teams are up to the task and we should wrestle the trophy from UCU,” USIU coach George Mayienga said.
