Driver to pay Sh3,000 for dumping donkeys in city centre

A Naivasha businessman has been fined Sh3,000 for ferrying 16 donkeys and dumping them in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Samson Karuru, a transporter, was arraigned before Nairobi City Magistrate Margaret Kurumbu where he pleaded guilty to two counts of releasing animals unlawfully in the CBD contrary to city by-laws.

The donkeys were dumped at the junction of Kenyatta Avenue and Muindi Mbingu Street, on Thursday morning as part of protests by political activists against insecurity.

The donkeys which were later taken to an animal sanctuary, had been spray-painted with graffiti and the words Tumechoka (we are tired).
Represented by lawyer Lempaa Soyinka, he said he had been hired to transport the donkeys from Naivasha by an unknown person who ran away after releasing them in the CBD.
