A teenager has died after falling from a fifth floor balcony at an apartment building near the IUPUI campus. Witnesses said 18 year old was scared, tried to escape from police during party.

The Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed the death of 18-year-old Xavier Somerville on Monday. Somerville was a Lawrence Central High School graduate who enrolled at Purdue University.

Police responding to a noise complaint near IUPUI discovered a party where people were drinking alcohol. Somerville tried to escape, police said, before falling to his death.

Officers were dispatched at 3 a.m. Monday to The Avenue Apartments near West 10th Street and University Boulevard. Officers heard loud music and a lot of noise coming from an apartment.

According to a police report, a frantic person greeted police, saying Somerville had just fallen from the balcony.

The responding officer went to the first floor and found Somerville unconscious on the sidewalk.

Witnesses told police the 18 year old got scared when he heard police were at the door and tried to swing from the fifth floor balcony to the fourth floor balcony. Somerville lost his grip and fell, witnesses said.

He was transported to Wishard Hospital, but died from his injuries.

The people inside the apartment told police they were having a party and had been drinking.

Six people were cited for alcohol-related violations, including a 22-year-old man ticketed for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Five other people under the age of 21 were cited for possession of alcohol by a minor.
