Former Seychelles Vice President Vincent Meriton has withdrawn his candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship in favor of Kenyan leader Raila Odinga.
Announcing his decision on Saturday, November 30, Meriton stated, "I withdrew my candidacy from the African Union Commission chairmanship race because I would not have been able to withstand the pressure that comes with the position."
In a show of solidarity, Meriton pledged his support for Odinga, whom he described as the ideal candidate for the role.
"Today, I want to lend my support to Raila Odinga. As Africa positions itself to be more assertive on the international scene, we need new leadership at the African Union Commission."
Meriton emphasized that the race is not about rivalry but about choosing the continent's best leader.
