Why I owe my seat to President Uhuru Kenyatta — Senator Joy Gwendo

Embattled TNA Senator Joy Gwendo was in the limelight again after she was temporarily suspended from party activities and Senate committees by her party.

But days later, TNA Secretary General refuted the suspension terming it a witch hunt.

Asked where the heat was coming from, Joy told The Nairobian: “I am being fought by TNA Kisumu officials because I refused to succumb to their kind of witch-hunt and misguided brand of politics. I decided to engage the people directly to sell TNA policies and use my position to benefit the widows, youth and women of Kisumu without being bogged down by officials whose only interest is personal gain. This is why they branded me a mole.”

Gwendo who maintained that there was nothing like being suspended, instead said: “This was just a recommendation of the National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) which has to be ratified by the party’s National Oversight Board (NOB). I have every confidence the NOB will dismiss this ridiculous recommendation.”

Asked about how he relates with President Uhuru, Joy said: “I enjoy a very warm and cordial relationship with H.E. The President. I owe him my position and respect him immensely. He means well for this country and will steer us to greater heights. My boss never forgets names and always calls me Gwendo whenever we meet.”

She added: “I know that majority of Luos are in ODM and view anyone in TNA as an outcast. However, over time they have come to accept me and the projects I have done for and with them. That is why they came out in huge numbers to offer support when this war broke out.”

Gwendo who claimed that many scandals have been engineered to bring her down says her achievements include a Bill she raised in parliament concerning creation of footpaths for the disabled, and a recent election as the first and only African woman board member of the Global Parliamentary Network in Washington D.C and the opening of four new fertiliser depots in Kisumu.

The nominated senator who declined to discuss individuals said she will use the energy to re energise herself for even better leadership.
