Policewoman shot and wounded as five suspected thugs are gunned down in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya: A policewoman was shot and seriously wounded Monday night in an attack by gunmen in Soweto area in Kayole, Nairobi.

This incident came as police shot and killed five suspects in separate incidents in the city and recovered guns and stolen property.

The officer attached to the local DC’s office was driving home Monday night, when gunmen, who had tried to carjack her, shot and wounded her in the hand, police said.

The gang escaped without stealing anything from her.

Police say they are yet to know the motive of the shooting adding that the injured officer is admitted to hospital in a stable condition.

“The policewoman is popular among some locals for fighting armed robberies”, said Kayole police boss Ali Nuno.

After the shooting, police trailed suspected thugs killing five of them. According to police, all the five were young men aged between 19 and 25 and were armed with guns and knives at the time of the killings.

Three guns, five mobile phones and a motorbike were recovered.

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibui said the first incident happened in Mowlem area, where three suspects were gunned down by police in a botched robbery on a mobile phone shop.

Kibui said the three were part of a five-man gang that had been attacking and robbing pedestrians, when an alarm was raised on Monday night.

“The officers recovered five stolen mobile phones and a gun while their two accomplices managed to escape on foot,” he said.

The second incident happened Tuesday morning in Eastleigh where a wanted suspect was killed after he attacked and robbed a woman of her bag.

Police say the man was behind a series of other similar incidents. A gun with two bullets was recovered.

Another suspect was killed in Embakasi in a botched robbery on an Mpesa shop. Police say they recovered a motorbike adding that two other suspects escaped on foot.
