Mt Elgon MP John Serut has called on security personnel and cyber crime detectives in the region to take stern action against residents propagating falsehood on social media.

Addressing the Press in Kapsokwony yesterday, Mr Serut (pictured) said his opponents were using social media to accuse him falsely, malign his name and incite residents against him and that the situation was worrying and may lead to tribal animosity if not arrested on time.

"The region is just healing from the 2005-2018 Sabaot Land Defense Force skirmishes and it is not good for residents to use social media platforms to scorn leaders. Let us embrace unity that will help this constituency grow economically," said Serut

He accused local security agents of laxity in handling sensitive matters even though they were in possession of reports that a section of residents were spewing hate messages on social media.

Serut claimed that some of his opponents had hijacked some social media platforms, which were being used as avenues of spreading propaganda intended to malign his name.

He said what had been posted in different Facebook and Whatsapp groups had wrongly portrayed him as a criminal who has used threats and intimidation to control CDF funds.
