Mombasa, Kenya: The county assembly has adopted a report supporting the construction of the second Nyali bridge where users will be required to pay for the service.

The committee on Transport and Public Works said the new bridge is necessary for Mombasa city's economic and residents' social life, especially those from the north mainland and the island.

"It will not only de-congest the existing Nyali bridge and the adjoining roads but will make transport between the north mainland and the north of the island faster," says the report signed by committee chairman Murfad Amur.

The report, dated March 17, this year was adopted by the members last week when it was tabled before the assembly.

 DUAL FUNDING

According to the report, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority plans to start the project next year through funding from the Government and private sector partners.

Grant from the private sector partners will be re-paid over the course of 25 years.

The exact location of thegbridge will be determined after the ongoing feasibility study, which should be ready by July this year.

"The major challenge is where the project will be situated since most of the land contains physical structures under private ownership. However, the national legislation should take care of this issue," noted Mr Amur.

The national government has appointed advisers led by Deloitte Consulting Ltd and other professionals to offer technical advice.
