Hospital receives Sh2.5 million for theatre facilities from IRA.

Kakamega, Kenya: Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) has donated Sh2.5 million to Kakamega County General Hospital to purchase theatre facilities.

IRA also donated a surgical table worth Sh1 million to boost surgery at the hospital.

Speaking on Tuesday while handing over the equipment and cheque to the hospital administration, Edward Opiayo said IRA is committed towards better healthcare in the whole country.

"We are committed to boost the health sector in the country by supporting hospitals with equipment and facilities to address the increasing demands for better medical services", said Opiayo.

He said they picked on Kakamega County General Hospital because of its capacity to handle emergencies and all referral cases in that county.

Dr Brenda Makokha, Kakamega County Director of Health, lauded IRA for helping the hospital realise its objectives towards improved health services.

She said the support will improve medical services at the hospital to effectively offer more surgical services.

"The hospital serves as our referral hospital therefore there is urgent need to equip it to handle most of the challenges in the health sector. We do not want people from this county to travel outside the county to access medical services" she said.

The level five hospital, which also serves the counties of Busia, Vihiga and Bungoma, has a bed capacity of 500 but plans are underway to expand it to 1, 000 to address the increasing health challenges in the region.
