Leaders ask Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter to stop supporting governor's referendum

North Rift region URP legislators yesterday asked Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter to withdraw his support for the Council of Governors referendum push to allow the Jubilee Alliance deliver its manifesto to Kenyans.

The leaders, led by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, said it is not right for Keter to appear as if he is working against the coalition that propelled him to power.

They were speaking in Eldoret where they attended an emotional mass for the late Titus Bett, 27, Henry Korir, 51, and Gideon Chesingil, 37, who were close aides of Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago.

The said the URP leadership ought to remain solid and all leaders should speak with one voice.

Sudi revealed that a section of leaders from the region, including the vocal Nandi hills legislator, held a meeting on Wednesday where they agreed to unite as the Kalenjin community and work together in championing the rights of their electorate.

"We had a meeting in Nairobi and we have vowed, together with Keter and other leaders from the region, to work toward delivering promises we made to residents. We also agreed to shelve divisive politics and the ongoing referendum push," he said.

Keter, who did not reveal details of what was discussed at the meeting, said there is need for URP to hold an inclusive meeting to solve pressing concerns between leaders.

"We need to unite and find solutions where we have gone astray because if we continue bickering while our electorate suffer, we shall have let them down as leaders," he said

Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Eusilah Ng'eny said leaders ought to support the parties and coalitions that got them elected, adding that this will repel any attempts by opposing camps to bring them down.

"We need to remain united so that residents who voted for us enjoy the enormous services offered by the Jubilee government," she said.

Speaking separately, Moiben MP Silas Tiren maintained that divisive politics amongst leaders from North Rift will hamper the region's development.
