Policy to help MCAs set up offices is rolled out

Kirinyaga, Kenya: Kirinyaga County Assembly has rolled out polices to guide MCAs as they seek to establish offices at their respective wards.

Before leasing any building to set up an office, the elected MCAs will be expected to first identify the building then adhere to set out public procurement procedures while nominated MCAs will be housed within the County Assembly premises.

"Where there is public land, an MCA may put up the facility provided all procurement procedures put down by the County Public Service Board are observed," said the Assembly's majority leader, Kinyua Wangui, when he read out the policy.

Wangui said while the ward reps will be allowed to have staff members, they will not choose their staff but will rely on those hired by the County Public Service Board, which is the only organ mandated to recruit personnel.

"The 20 elected MCAs are entitled to five staff members while their nine nominated counterparts will have three," said the majority leader.

He said those who want to be the MCAs personal assistants must have post-secondary level education, preferably be university graduates.
