JKIA police arrest foreigner with fake dollars worth Sh21million

NAIROBI, KENYA: Police at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are holding a Taiwanese man after he was found carrying fake money valued at more than Sh21.2 million.

The money was in US dollars and had been wrapped in a paper bag when it was detected by customs officials.

The man in his late 30s had arrived aboard Ethiopian airline from Abu Dhabi Sunday night when he was intercepted while carrying the 250,000USD.

Police say he intended to use the money in Nairobi because his final destination was there.

“His final destination was in Nairobi at least according to his traveling documents. Unless he intended to move to other places,” said airport CID boss Joseph Ngisa.

Ngisa said, had the useless bills passed the screening by mistake they could ruin the economy.

His traveling documents showed he is a regular visitor in Nairobi.

The suspect was expected in court Monday to face charges of being in possession of fake money. The charge can attract up to 14 years in jail.
