Rachel Ruto urges women into business

Kirinyaga, Kenya: Deputy President William Ruto’s wife, Rachel, has told women not to shy away from venturing into income generating projects as a means to improve their families’ lives.

Mrs Ruto said gone were the days when women were seen as mere housewives who only waited for their husbands to provide for the family.

She said with the many financial opportunities put in place by the Government, every woman should ensure they are multiplying their resources to uplift the living standards of their families.

“More than ever before, our Government has put in place an enabling environment for women to do business especially the Uwezo Fund which is easier to access and devoid of the many stringent requirements placed by banks,” she said.

Role models

She was speaking at the Kutus Anglican hall in Kirinyaga County when she launched the Table Banking concept.

Mrs Ruto said the Government has created many financial opportunities for woman, and those interested in becoming entrepreneurs have nothing to stop them from achieving their ultimate goals.

She said women in the area are role models after having been at the forefront in providing for their families, with some men consumed by illicit brews.

“I thank women from this well endowed county for having been able to feed, educate and bring up your children even in situations where you have been abandoned by some of your drunken husbands. This is the spirit since a woman is by nature a protector,” she said.

Ms Ruto was hosted by the MP Winnie Karimi, wife of area governor Wamunyu Ndathi and Mrs Charity Wangithi, wife of the county senator.

She said the Jubilee administration had done well in the last one year in addressing women issues.

She later toured the Mwea Nice Rice Miller.
