Group sex is the emerging trend among young people

Group sex is the emerging trend among the adolescents in most parts of the country. Many of you can recall the Eldoret incident where high school students were found in a room doing drugs and engaging in group sex.  The act is picking up so fast among the adolescent. In Kisumu County a lot of young boys and girls are doing it in broad daylight during school holidays. They organize parties during the day when their parents are away so that they can do whatever they want.

What is worrying is that these young boys and girls rarely use protection, putting themselves at higher risk of getting HIV, STIs and even unintended pregnancy.

In most cases these young boys and girls are usually under the influence of drugs hence making it difficult for them to use protection during sex. This clearly explains why cases of new HIV infections among the adolescents and young people are on the rise in Kenya.

According to the National Aids Control Council, 29% of all new HIV infections in Kenya are among the adolescents and young people. Moreover, 16% of all people living with HIV are adolescents and youths. The level of comprehensive knowledge among young people stands at 59%. 41 % of young people still don’t know that use of condoms and monogamy can prevent HIV transmission and that a healthy looking person can have HIV infection.

Ending new HIV infections among the adolescents and young people in Kenya requires more investments on Comprehensive Sexuality Education at schools. I believe that Knowledge is power and knowing all about HIV prevention can bring down cases of new HIV infections among the adolescents to zero.
