KRA registers 1.6 million taxpayers on iTax

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) registered 200,000 users in May 2015 on the iTax system, bringing the total number of users to 1.6 million, marking an monthly increase of approximately 60,000 taxpayers per month. Commissioner General John Njiraini said the authority is using data from iTax to design and implement effective compliance strategies.

"The Authority is leveraging on the iTax system to improve client service and promote voluntary compliance," he said.

KRA has been conducting hands-on training and sensitisation programmes through tax education programmes that are being run countrywide to support taxpayers register on iTax. The taxman has also partnered with appointed licensed and trained intermediary agents who assist taxpayers register and file their returns through the iTax system.

Njiraini urged Kenyans to file their Individual Income Tax returned early so as to beat the June 30, 2015 deadline. However, for taxpayers who might experience challenges in accessing online services to file their returns, KRA will accept manual returns.

"KRA has a dedicated team on standby that will be accessible to offer assistance to those who are likely to experience challenges in filing their returns," said Njraini. The authority has six iTax Support Centres and has presence at 16 Huduma Centres.
