Bank boosts Jua Kali artisans with Sh3m health check-up

Nairobi; Kenya: I&M Bank has boosted artisans through a medical camp to cover their health. The lender spent Sh3 million to provide free medical services covering diagnostic kits, medications and other logistics.

I&M Bank Chief Executive Officer Arun Mathur said the financial institution was reaching out to the under-privileged population and help improve their lives. “As a bank, we have a robust social responsibility programme and health is one of the key pillars,” said Mathur. “For the two days, we’ll be spending Sh3 million to provide medical services to the artisans.”

He was speaking during the launch of a two day free medical camp in Muthurwa Primary School on Saturday, targeting to reach 3,000 Jua Kali members. The event also saw pupils from the school benefit from free medical services. Mr Mathur said the bank chose to hold the camp for Jua Kali artisans due to the nature of their work which exposes them to numerous health risks.

A team of doctors and paramedical staff provided general health care and specialised medical services. “October is a breast cancer awareness month and we have taken this into consideration. From available statistics, we know cancer is on the rise, especially the prostate cancer and since the Jua Kali fraternity is male dominated, prostate cancer screening will be key at this camp," he said.

"We have also provided screening for ear, nose and throat (ENT) because we feel this group is exposed to a lot of noise and dust,” he added.
