Kisii governor Ongwae downplays politics, says he is busy fulfilling his promises

Governor James Ongwae

Governor James Ongwae has said ongoing political realignments in the region will not distract him from fulfilling his promises to the people. Neither will he allow the battle for political supremacy to spoil his plans to improve the economy.

“I want to improve the lives of our people by initiating new projects in health, water and infrastructure. We are also creating new investment opportunities,” said Mr Ongwae.

Kisii County has experienced increased political activity as leaders seek new alliances ahead of next year’s elections. A group led by the county’s Orange Democratic Movement secretary, Chris Obure, has criticised Ongwae’s performance saying it falls below expectations.

STATE HOUSE

Last week, the group visited State House in Nairobi, after which there were rumours that they were planning to defect to the Jubilee party.

After the meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, some of the leaders said they had decided to work with the Government to develop the region. Others denied reports that they were planning to leave ODM but pointed out that they would join Jubilee “if the people ask us to”.

Yesterday, Ongwae said he wants to spend his time fulfilling his promise to the people.

“This is not just about politics but about the people of Kisii County. We have initiated several projects that are intended to improve their lives and we want to see to it that they are completed,” said the governor.

“Despite challenges, my government has made several strides, including the establishment of a 24-hour economy in Kisii town.”
