Rianyanchabera beat Barchando Lake Region rugby

RUGBY GIRLS Mouffine Akello (with the ball) of Lwak Girls charges for a breakthrough in the opponents's side during their quarter final match against Rianyanchabera Girls. Rianyanchabera won 34-0.

Newcomers Rianyanchabera High School are this year’s new champions in the Kenya Rugby Union’s Lake Region Girls Rugby Sevens tournament.

The newcomers from Kisii County emerged winners after a fierce and grueling duel with defending title holders Barchando Girls from Siaya County that ended 5-0.

Rianyanchabera had a smooth cruise to the finals after enjoying comfortable victories against all their opponents in their preliminary matches.

It was an entertaining final between the new champions against deposed champions Barchando as the former put up a spirited fight to retain the championship they won against St Mary’s Lwak in last year’s derby.

But Rianyanchabera girls proved a hard nut to crack especially after they successfully made two tries and a single conversion in the first half of the game.

Teamwork displayed between the front runners Violet Momanyi, Janet Nyang’au and Christine Nyaribo saw the anchor Rianyanchabera’s victory.

Spirited efforts from Barchando who also enjoyed wins from all their preliminary matches never saw them come out with anything out of the match. Barchando had emerged tops in Group A which had Gakero from Kisii County and county-mates Lwak Girls.

On the other hand, Rianyanchabera had Nyabisagwa from Migori, Homabay County’s Ndiiru and Nyabigena from Kisii.

Rianyanchabera beat Lwak 34-0 in quarters before meeting Nyamira’s Ekerubo whom they thrashed 31-0.

Barchando also booked semifinal space withAsumbi Girls of Homabay after beating Nyabigena from Kisii 14-0.

Sinyolo and Ahero Girls also made it to the quarters but were shrugged off as the tournament entered the semif finals.
