The national government will give a grant for the construction of Mariene University in Meru County, Deputy President William Ruto has announced.

Mr Ruto, who was attending fundraisers for South Imenti Youth Empowerment Sacco and Kirigara Girls High School in Central Imenti, said he and President Uhuru Kenyatta wanted the university built in the area to meet the high demand for higher education in the county.

The DP said the Government had already set aside funds for construction of the crucial Mati Road, which will connect Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.

“The misunderstanding that had been there with the contractor has been solved. Now we have given Intex Construction 10 months to complete the road,” said Ruto, who was accompanied by Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi.

He said an additional 140 kilometres of tarmac will be laid in Meru this year.

“The tendering has been done as we go forward with plans. But we also would like the governors to appreciate the fact that we all work for the same citizens, and not to take us to court on roads,” Ruto said.

He said the Jubilee government would give Meru farmers 38 new milk cooling plants to store their milk while awaiting transportation to processors.

On security, Ruto said the Government had bought 47 new patrol vehicles to secure the Nyambene zone, which has been hit with cattle rustling and other insecurity incidents.

The DP also announced that 580 schools in the area had already been connected to the electricity grid. “The remaining 38 schools will be connected by end of February,” he assured.

The function was also attended by Governor Peter Munya, Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, MPs Mpuru Aburi, Joseph Eruaki, Muthomi Njuki, Njogu Barua, Mithika Linturi, David Karithi, Rahim Dawood, Florence Kajuju, Kubai Kiringo, Gideon Irea, Kathuri Murungi, Speaker Joseph Kaberia and MCAs.
