Bride and groom spend wedding day feeding 4,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey

A selfless bride and groom chose to celebrate their nuptials by inviting 4,000 Syrian refugees to share their big day with them.

Newlyweds Fethullah Üzümcüo?lu and Esra Polat donated all their savings to share their celebrations with displaced families living in poverty nearby.

Fethullah Üzümcüo?lu and Esra Polat married in the southern Turkish city of Kilis and offered all the food intended for their wedding party to displaced families living in poverty nearby.

Traditional Turkish weddings last between Tuesday and Thursday, culminating in a huge banquet on the final night.

But the newlyweds chose to donate all their families’ savings for the party to share their celebrations with refugees living on the Syrian border.

The generous idea came from groom's father, Ali Üzümcüo?lu.

He told i100.co.uk: "I thought that sharing a big delicious dinner with our family and friends was unnecessary, knowing that there are so many people in need living next door.

"So I came up with this idea and shared it with my son. I’m very happy that he accepted it and they started their new happy journey with such a selfless action."

Nearly two million Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey and in the town of Kilis, there are 4,000 refugees fed by charity Kimse Yok Mu.

In total, there are four million Syrian refugees who had fled the country in what the UN described as the worst crisis of its kind in a generation.

Almost eight million people are displaced within the country, according to the UN.

Bride Esra was delighted to be able to share her special day with those in need.

She told i100.co.uk: "I was shocked when Fethullah first told me about the idea but afterwards I was won over by it. It was such a wonderful experience.

"I’m happy that we had the opportunity to share our wedding meal with the people who are in real need."
