Kaimenyi should expedite Education reforms before more innocent lives are lost

Sentiments from Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof. Kaimenyi that he won’t change his mind on the holiday tuition bans are shocking. Tuitions are as old as education and his stringent stand on not reinstating holiday coaching is appalling. Holiday tuitions both in Primary and Secondary schools play a vital and fundamental role in syllabus coverage by ensuring the time set aside has been used efficiently and effectively.

Again, for the schools which are lucky enough to have completed their course work, use this time to do comprehensive revision especially for Mock examinations which contains innumerable questions that are tested in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Recently we have witnessed secondary schools students go on rampage due to Mock Examinations phobia. One of key factor which has contributed to the malady is failure to complete syllabuses in time and thus students lack enough courage to sit for the external examinations.

Parents were glad when holiday tuitions were abolished back in 2012 but majority of them have realized the vitality of such extra coaching after witnessing dismal performance in their student’s report forms. Tuitions help to increase the teacher student contact hours and hence a lot can be done pertaining to revision and course work. Failure to consider abrogation of the tuition ban, private schools will keep on producing exemplary performances in national examinations.

It’s unfortunate that they accommodate holiday tuitions albeit the ban in both public and private institutions. I beseech Kaimenyi to eradicate the ban in order to enable students and pupils prepare for all examinations satisfactorily. By considering this, am cock sure abundant schools will produce stunning performances with time. Again cases of exam malpractices will reduce drastically due to adequate preparations for examinations.
