Netherlands announces provisional budget to strengthen civil societies

 

NAIROBI, KENYA: Kenyan communities are set to benefit from 2016 provisional budget of over Sh5 billion (50 million Euros) through strategic partnership and funding from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Tuesday, the Kenya Country Director Cordaid, Jennie van de Weerd said the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs has set aside the budget to strengthen civil society in low-and middle-income countries, through its dialogue and dissent programme.

“Partners for Resilience will join the National and County Governments and other stakeholders to proactively empower local community members for a more open, more inclusive and more sustainable society,” she said.

“With our vast global experience in building flourishing communities in fragile societies, we are ready to share our wealth of knowledge, skills and technical expertise.”

The Dutch Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFS II) has been implementing projects to improve sanitation and diversify livelihoods of over 100,000 Kenyans. 

On Tuesday, three MFS II Alliance partners: WASH Alliance Kenya, Partners for Resilience (PfR) and the Ecosystem Alliance today hosted the marketplace event to share success stories and showcase their achievements in water and sanitation; disaster risk reduction and ecosystem management.

Partners for Resilience Alliance aims to increase building resilience of vulnerable communities to address increased disaster risks, and the effects of climate change and environmental degradation in Isiolo, Laikipia and Samburu Counties.

“By working in partnership with the national and county governments, civil society organizations and the private sector, we have helped thousands of pastoralist communities cope with droughts and disaster risks, amplifying the impact for better policies, legislation and enhanced integration and coordination for resilience building,” Said PfR’s member representative Jennie van de Weerd, Country Director Cordaid Kenya.

Tobias Omufwoko, Country liaison for WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) Alliance noted that, “Our organization has been a vehicle for improved, sustainable WASH approaches in the country in partnership with member organizations”.  

Julie Mulonga the Programs Manager  Wetlands International highlighted that “The Ecosystem Alliance “focuses on the Tana Delta and works towards lobbying and advocacy for protection and conservation of the delta at the same time promoting climate friendly alternative livelihoods for the local pastoral and agricultural communities.

The Marketplace event was a display of results, opportunities, challenges and lessons learnt during the lifetime of the projects. It also documented the best practices and disseminated lessons among the stakeholders.
