Boniface Mwangi assaulted, arrested for allegedly photographing bodaboda protest

NAIROBI: Activist Boniface Mwangi was Wednesday evening arrested and booked at the Central Police Station after a physical and ugly confrontation with police at City Hall.

He was among other issues, accused of assaulting police officers, resisting arrest and causing disturbance outside City Hall. 

He was later released on a Sh50,000 cash bail pending probe and his appearance in court.

Witnesses said he had gone to help boda boda riders get back their motorbikes that had been detained during a protest they had in the city streets against harassment when a confrontation broke out.

According to witnesses, Mwangi who runs Pawa254 tried to record the drama which angered police who were there.

"They landed on him with kicks and clubs before taking him to Central for assault, resisting arrest and causing disturbance," said a member of his team.

A lawyer arrived at station and managed to convince officers there to release him on cash bail. His wife said Mwangi had pains after the confrontation and they had to take him to hospital for checks.

Central OCPD Paul Wanjama said they are investigating incident of disturbance against Mwangi.

The activist is scheduled to appear in court on July 13.
