School van crushes boy, 3, to death in Nyayo estate, Embakasi

Nairobi, Kenya: A school boy was Monday crushed to death by a van that had just dropped him home in a bizarre accident at Nyayo estate in Embakasi, Nairobi.

The accident happened as the driver reversed the van after he had dropped the three-year-old child Monday afternoon, police said.

It was a somber mood after the driver and the residents learnt of the death of Master Fredrick Onyango who was in baby class at a local school.

The driver said he had dropped the child near his residence and was reversing to continue dropping others when he was informed of the accident.

The van ran over the child killing him on the spot. Police were later called to the scene and carried the body to the mortuary.

Residents raised concern about the movement of such vans within the estate and declared they would demand their banning.

Police said they were holding the driver as investigations into the accident go on. Nairobi head of traffic Edward Mwamburi said they will take action once investigations are complete.

“That was a horrible accident but we are investigating it to know how it happened,” said Mwamburi.

Other residents termed the accident unfortunate.

"It is very wrong to be called that your child has been killed in an accident outside your house," said a resident.
