County officials take off after MP, youths raid police station and free suspects

Four Kitui County officials were forced to flee after youths, accompanied by Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu, stormed Nguni Police Station in Mwingi Central Constituency.

The enforcement officers; Elijah Kolite, Sammy Ngondi, James Mulwa and Sila Munyasya escaped the wrath of the mob by a whisker, after they were whisked off in a county government vehicle.

Drama began when Mutambu and company demanded the freedom of 30 youths who had been arrested and detained at the station.

The youths were arrested for allegedly attempting to disrupt a meeting presided over by Governor Julius Malombe.

He questioned the rationale of arresting the youths, alleged to have been “hired to cause chaos at the governor’s function” at Ndiamumo Primary School on Saturday.

When the confrontation at the police station threatened to explode, 12 suspects’ handcuffs were unlocked, and they immediately turned their fury on the four officers.

The MP then drove to the school, where more confusion reigned as students, parents and residents tried to leave fearing they would be attacked by the youths in the company of the MP.

But contractor Joseph Ngeana calmed down the gathering and stop the walk outs.

Mutambu reassured the crowd, saying he would be the last person to organise hooligans to disrupt such an event.

“I want you Governor Malombe to understand the kind of person I am. You might not be aware of the real Joe Mutambu. I cannot bar you or any other leader, even if it’s a devil, from visiting this constituency to initiate development,” he said.
