Two inmates serving life suffocate colleague in cell

Two inmates at Naivasha GK Prison killed their colleague before surrendering to the warders Wednesday .

They first suffocated their victim using blankets before slitting his throat using a razor blade.

The two inmates are serving life sentences.

The motive of the killing was not clear but sources indicated that the two were venting their anger on the victim after their efforts to get a transfer to Kisumu GK Prison failed.

Following the lunch time incident, security was beefed up as CID officers visited the scene while the suspects were locked up. According to a junior officer who declined to be named, the three were among other inmates in the remand block when the incident occurred.

The officer said the two vented their anger on the defenceless victim inside one of the cells without provocation.

The officer in charge of the prison Patrick Mwenda (pictured) said the slain inmate was serving 10 years for indecent assault.

"The two inmates were serving life sentences for robbery with violence and we are working with police to determine the motive of the killing," he said.

The agitated officer confirmed that one of the inmates had sought a transfer to Kisumu, adding that this had been approved.

"The two lured the victim into their cell where they suffocated him using a blanket and later slashed his neck using a sharp object," he said.

Mwenda declined to release the name of the victim until the next of kin are notified, adding that the incident would not deter them in their reform duty.

A senior police officer confirmed the incident adding that they are investigating the incident.

"The two suspects have been locked up after the incident and will record statements," said the officer.
