Swim trip goes awry as youth drowns in Lake Naivasha

Nakuru, Kenya: An excursion by a group of youths in Lake Naivasha ended tragically after one of them drowned while swimming.

The group of about 20 had visited the lake during the holiday season when the incident occurred.

A witness Daniel Kimathi said that the group had swam for over an hour and some had even dressed up when the 19-year-old drowned.

He said the deceased ventured into the deep side where he disappeared as his colleagues screamed for help.

A senior police officer who declined to be named said the body was recovered hours later.

“The youths were on an expedition but tragedy struck, leaving one of the teenagers dead,” said the officer.

The officer said that the body of the youth was retrieved from the lake and taken to the Naivasha sub-county hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, highway robbers struck two lorries ferrying fertiliser worth over Sh14 million and carted away the loot along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road.

The drivers were forcibly drugged and later dumped by the roadside as police moved in to investigate the matter.

Hours later, one of the trucks with its cargo intact was recovered in Naivasha while the other was found in Mukurweini minus its cargo.
