Private doctor to examine Muchai murder suspect after torture claims

George Muchai and his three aides were killed on February 7 in an attack within Nairobi CBD.

Nairobi, Kenya:  A court has directed Simon Gichamba, one of the suspects in the murder of former Kabete MP George Muchai and his three aides, be examined by a doctor after he alleged being tortured in police custody.

Milimani Resident Magistrate Miriam Mugure Friday directed Gichamba be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and be examined by private doctor.

The suspect's lawyer Khamadi Shamalla told court that the suspect’s private parts were interfered with and he required urgent medical attention.

His lawyer also alleged the suspect, who wept uncontrollably throughout the court session, has been denied access to a lawyer of his choice.

Flight risk

Lawyer Shamalla wanted the suspect released on bond to allow him undergo examination over torture claims but State Counsel Daniel Karori opposed, saying he is a flight risk.

The magistrate also directed police to ensure the rights of the suspect are respected and he be allowed access to a lawyer of choice.

Uncharacteristic of other court appearances, Gichamba's relatives thronged the courtroom during the Friday morning session.

The magistrate directed a medical report be filed in court to show the extent of injuries Gichamba sustained while in police custody. He is expected back in court on March 10.

The state has said he is set to face murder and robbery charges alongside six others.
